Political tensions in Umunneochi Local Government Area of Abia State have escalated as the Agun’echeibe Youth Movement publicly rebuked former Minister and ex-lawmaker, Nkiru Onyejeocha, over alleged derogatory remarks directed at the sitting council chairman amid the lingering controversy surrounding constituency empowerment initiatives.
In a strongly worded statement released on Saturday, the youth organization condemned Onyejeocha for reportedly describing the local government chairman as a “lunatic,” characterizing the comment as an attack on democratic values and a slight against the people of Umunneochi.
According to the group, such remarks undermine the dignity of elected offices and reflect poorly on political leadership.
“The utterance credited to Barr. Onyejeocha is not only unfortunate but reflects a troubling level of intolerance for criticism,” the statement read. “Public office holders must be accountable to the people, not resort to insults when questioned.”
The youth movement linked the current dispute to renewed public criticism of Onyejeocha’s previous constituency empowerment programme, particularly the controversial distribution model in which one tricycle was reportedly allocated to three beneficiaries — an initiative that has remained a subject of debate among constituents.
Describing the development as emblematic of a broader need for responsible and people-focused leadership, the group reaffirmed its support for Hon. Amobi Godwin Ogah, whom it praised for exemplifying responsive governance and respect for the electorate.
“Leadership is about service, humility, and delivering measurable impact. That is the standard Hon. Amobi Godwin Ogah represents,” the statement added.
The latest exchange has intensified political discourse in the area, with community stakeholders increasingly calling for decorum, accountability, and more meaningful representation in addressing the socio-economic concerns of Umunneochi residents.
As the controversy unfolds, many observers say the episode underscores the growing demand for issue-based politics over personal attacks.
