Presidential hopeful under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Peter Obi, has intensified his strategic consultations ahead of the 2027 general elections with a high-level meeting with former President Goodluck Jonathan in Abuja.
The closed-door engagement, which brought together prominent South-East political figures, underscored Obi’s growing efforts to build broader national alliances as he positions himself for the ADC presidential primary.
Among those in his delegation were serving and former federal lawmakers, alongside former Imo State Governor Achike Udenwa.
Addressing journalists after the meeting, Obi described the visit as part of wider political consultations focused on Nigeria’s future and the evolving dynamics ahead of the 2027 elections.
“Notable South-East leaders have come in consultation with our respected former president. That is basically what it is—on the 2027 elections and, overall, about Nigeria,” Obi stated.
The meeting with Jonathan is the latest in a series of strategic engagements by the former Labour Party presidential candidate, who has been actively reaching out to influential political stakeholders across Nigeria in pursuit of a stronger national coalition.
Just last week, Obi was in Bauchi where he, alongside South-East leaders, met with Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed as part of efforts to consolidate support from the North-East.
Speaking after that engagement, Obi stressed that his mission transcends electoral ambition, focusing instead on national unity and rebuilding the country.
“My purpose is to solicit the support and cooperation of His Excellency and the stakeholders of Bauchi and the North-East in our quest to unite this country. We want to have a united country to build a future for our children,” he said.
He further warned that Nigeria’s current trajectory demands urgent correction.
“The country cannot continue the way it is today; we are headed in the wrong direction, and we need to reverse that for everybody. That is the simple purpose of why we are here—to seek the support of the stakeholders of Bauchi in building a new Nigeria that will be of benefit to all.”
Obi’s sustained outreach signals an ambitious strategy to forge cross-regional political consensus, strengthen his national appeal, and position himself as a formidable contender in Nigeria’s next presidential race.
