With political activities gradually gathering momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections, hundreds of women from the twelve political wards of Umunneochi Local Government Area of Abia State have reaffirmed their commitment to the re-election bid of Governor Alex Otti by inaugurating ward executives of the Onu-Ugu Women Support Group and pledging to deepen grassroots mobilisation across the council area.
The mobilisation programme, organised by the Umunneochi chapter of Onu-Ugu Women for Governor Alex Otti in collaboration with Alpha Abia Arise, brought together women from across the local government in a colourful display of solidarity and political engagement.
The event also featured the formal presentation of candidates seeking elective offices in the forthcoming elections.
Onu-Ugu Women for Dr. Alex Otti is a political support structure initiated by the wife of the Governor, Her Excellency, Mrs. Priscilla Otti, to mobilise women across Abia State in support of the policies, programmes and developmental agenda of the state government.
Speaking as Chief Host, the Executive Mayor of Umunneochi Local Government Area, Hon. Sunny Afurobi, applauded the women for their unwavering commitment to Governor Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, describing their support as critical to the administration’s achievements across the state.
According to Afurobi, the Otti administration has continued to foster inclusive governance, strengthen peace and security, and ensure that Umunneochi indigenes receive fair representation in government appointments.
The Mayor also highlighted several developmental projects executed by the Governor in Umunneochi, noting that many more are currently ongoing.
He assured residents that his administration would continue to complement the Governor’s efforts in delivering sustainable development and improving the welfare of the people.
Afurobi further commended the Umunneochi women, led by the State Coordinator of Onu-Ugu Women, Lady Mrs. Grace Ibeh, for successfully organising what he described as an impressive and well-attended mobilisation programme.
Urging members to remain focused and united as preparations for the 2027 elections intensify, the Mayor called on them to sustain their support for Governor Alex Otti, Chief Bourdex Onuoha Ogba for the Senate, Hon. Amobi Ogah for the House of Representatives, and Hon. Mathias Umeh for the Abia State House of Assembly.
A major highlight of the event was the inauguration of newly elected ward executives by members of the State Board of Trustees of the organisation, a development aimed at strengthening the group’s grassroots structures across all twelve political wards of the local government.
The gathering was enlivened by colourful cultural displays, traditional dances and welcome songs performed by women from the various wards, reflecting the enthusiasm and unity that characterised the event.
Among dignitaries present were Hon. Dr. Mrs. Ngozi Azodo, Special Assistant to the Governor on Health; Hon. Mrs. Salome Onwu; councillors from Umunneochi Local Government Area; Surveyor Ike Orika of the Greater Ohafia Development Authority; former Transition Committee Chairperson of the council, Hon.
