Unmasking The Campaign Of Calumny Against Minister Of State For Defence, Dr. Bello Matawalle

13 November 2024

As the people of Umunneochi Local Government Area (LGA) reflect on the first 100 days of Chief Sunday Nduka Afurobi’s tenure as Mayor, one thing is clear: his leadership has ushered in a new era of transformation, commitment, and action. From infrastructure development to economic empowerment and security, Mayor Afurobi has translated his campaign promises into visible and impactful changes.

A Vision For Progress

Before his election on November 2, 2024, Afurobi, then the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) candidate, articulated an ambitious plan to revitalize Umunneochi. His pledges focused on ensuring that every local government fund was utilized for the people’s benefit, addressing power infrastructure, improving access to potable water, and enhancing security in continuation of his predecessor’s efforts.

He also committed to extensive road rehabilitation, cash crop development to stimulate the local economy, support for farmers with high-yield seedlings, and comprehensive youth empowerment programmes encompassing education, healthcare, and skills acquisition. His core promise was clear: to engage directly with community members to understand their challenges and deliver solutions that impact their daily lives.

Delivering On Promises: The First 100 Days

From the moment he assumed office on November 4, 2024, Mayor Afurobi wasted no time in setting the wheels of progress in motion. His administration immediately rolled out a short-term development agenda, prioritizing infrastructure, security, economic revitalization, and community welfare.

Infrastructure And Road Development

One of the Mayor’s first major initiatives was the commencement of Phase 1 of the grading of rural feeder roads in December 2024. Under this project, at least ten major roads, including Afor Umuaku Umudi-Amaeke Road, Eke Isuochi-Achara Road, Umukparo Road, and Orie Ngodo-Obinulo-Ndiawa Road, were given facelifts, while the collapsed Umuokpara Bridge in Achara is currently being reconstructed, set for completion within 21 days from commencement of work.

The Mayor assured residents that all roads would eventually receive attention, emphasizing the use of local labour to create job opportunities during the festive season. Additionally, the construction of the Mbala–Umuaku–Ngodo road by the Abia State Government finally commenced, having met all necessary requirements.

Power And Water Supply Restoration

Recognizing the need for a stable electricity supply, Mayor Afurobi has embarked on a drive to repair vandalized transformers and install new ones across the LGA. Steady electricity supply has already been restored in several areas, with intensified efforts to energize Umuchieze.

In addition, the Mayor’s intervention at the local government headquarters has led to the restoration of water supply, providing free water access to Nkwoagu residents. These initiatives are geared towards improving living standards and boosting business activities.

Security And Community Engagement

Security remains a top priority for the administration. The Mayor has strengthened collaborations with security agencies and local vigilante groups to tackle crime and protect public infrastructure. Food security initiatives are also in motion, including partnerships with the All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN) to support local farmers with seedlings, fertilizers, training, and leased agricultural land.

To further boost the agricultural sector, a large-scale pig farming project is being launched to position Umunneochi as a hub for pork production while addressing farmland disputes.

Economic Development: Nollywood And Tourism

Mayor Afurobi’s administration is actively engaging Nollywood stakeholders to develop the entertainment sector in Umunneochi. Plans are underway to establish a film village, creating employment for youths and modernizing cultural festivals. The Skills Acquisition Centre in Nkwoagu has also been designated for the Umunneochi Nollywood project, which is expected to drive economic growth and attract investments.

Education And Youth Empowerment

Education remains at the heart of the Mayor’s development agenda. He has reaffirmed Governor Otti’s vision for free education and teacher recruitment in public schools. After assessing the state of secondary schools, the Mayor has pledged to implement significant reforms to raise education standards.

In a major youth empowerment drive, 30 Umunneochi youths have been selected for a three-month Information and Communication Technology (ICT) training programme- TechRise, Igniting Digital Excellence through advanced digital skills programme, sponsored by Abia State government and the seventeen Local Government Area Chairmen, in collaboration with Learn Factory Organisation.

Already, Mayor Afurobi has announced a donation of a laptop to each of the 30 participants to aid their training. They are in addition, expected to receive essential tools to establish themselves in a world now driven by technology.

Additionally, the administration has initiated plans for primary and secondary school sports competitions, aiming to nurture young talents and provide career pathways for aspiring athletes.

Women Empowerment And Community Development

Mayor Afurobi has shown strong support for women’s initiatives, endorsing the December 2024 Mbala Women’s Football Competition as part of efforts to foster unity and encourage young women’s participation in sports. His administration also continues to engage traditional and community leaders to ensure inclusive governance and collective decision-making.

A Future Of Promise And Progress

Mayor Afurobi’s 100 days in office have set a strong foundation for Umunneochi’s transformation. His administration’s commitment to transparency, effective service delivery, and community-driven development has inspired renewed trust among residents.

With ambitious projects underway in infrastructure, agriculture, education, security, and entertainment, Mayor Afurobi’s leadership promises a brighter future for Umunneochi. As he continues his tenure, the people of Umunneochi can look forward to a government that not only listens but also delivers on its promises, building a resilient and prosperous LGA for generations to come.
