The National Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Chief Barr. Sly Ezeokenwa, has expressed deep shock and sorrow over the passing of Chief Maja Emeka Alex Umeh (Okwoaka na Anya Amichi), a highly respected member of the party’s Board of Trustees, former Anambra State Commissioner for Information, and an outstanding public servant.
In a heartfelt tribute, Chief Ezeokenwa described Chief Umeh’s death as a profound loss—not only to the APGA family but also to the people of Anambra State and the entire Southeast region, and praised Umeh’s unwavering commitment to the growth and stability of APGA, highlighting his integrity, dedication, and statesmanship as hallmarks of his political life.
“Chief Maja Umeh was a cornerstone of our party—a man of remarkable wisdom, courage, and principled conviction. As a Trustee, he played a crucial role in strengthening APGA’s institutional framework with his wealth of experience. His was a voice of reason, unity, and steadfast commitment to the ideals of justice and equity that define our party,” Chief Ezeokenwa stated.
Reflecting on Umeh’s tenure as Commissioner for Information, Culture, and Tourism, the APGA Chairman noted that he was instrumental in rebranding Anambra State’s image and spearheading a cultural renaissance among the Igbo. Notably, Chief Umeh initiated the collaborative celebration of the New Yam Festival by Southeast governors—a landmark effort that promoted cultural cohesion across the region.
“Chief Maja Umeh leaves behind a legacy that is both inspiring and indelible. He stood firmly for what was right, fearlessly spoke truth to power, and served with rare dignity and grace. His counsel, his presence, and his enduring passion for our party and state will be deeply missed,” Ezeokenwa added.
Chief Ezeokenwa extended his heartfelt condolences to the Umeh family, the government and people of Anambra State, and all who mourn the passing of this remarkable leader.
He prayed for the peaceful repose of Chief Umeh’s soul.
