The Executive Chairman of Umunneochi Local Government Area, Mayor Sunny Afurobi, has described Prof. Ihechukwu Madubuike as a priceless asset to Umunneochi, Abia State, and Nigeria, as dignitaries from across the world gathered to celebrate the scholar’s 83rd birthday and the launch of his new books.
Speaking with journalists during the celebration at the Michael Okpara Auditorium, Mayor Afurobi joined other distinguished guests in congratulating Prof. Madubuike on attaining the age of 83 in good health.
He said the occasion was a fitting tribute to a renowned academic, statesman, and intellectual whose contributions to education, human capital development, and national growth have left an enduring legacy.
The Mayor noted that the double celebration reflected the high esteem in which Prof. Madubuike is held by his community and the wider society, and noted that the scholar’s life and accomplishments continue to inspire generations of students, academics, public servants, and community leaders.
Commenting on the book launch, Mayor Afurobi said Prof. Madubuike had once again demonstrated his exceptional intellectual depth through the publication of another set of scholarly works, and added that the books would serve as valuable resources for research, learning, and academic advancement.
He also commended Dr. Jasper Uche, the Umunneochi-born book reviewer, for what he described as a brilliant and insightful review of the publications, noting that Dr. Uche’s presentation reflected a high level of scholarship and academic excellence.
Mayor Afurobi further applauded the Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, for honouring Prof. Madubuike during his lifetime and described the gesture as a demonstration of appreciation for the elder statesman’s invaluable contributions to the growth and development of Abia State since its creation.
“The Governor’s action is a clear indication of his love and regard for the people of Umunneochi,” the Mayor said, assuring Governor Otti of the continued support and appreciation of the people of the area.
He also thanked the people of Umunneochi for turning out in large numbers to celebrate Prof. Madubuike and his family, noting that their presence reflected the enduring spirit of unity, love, and brotherhood among the people.
In their goodwill messages, the National President of the Isuochi Community Development Association, Engr. Chief Ochi Orji, Chief Pat Enwere, Chief Romanus Madu, and other prominent sons of Isuochi congratulated Prof. Madubuike on the double celebration.
They described him as an illustrious son whose outstanding contributions have positively impacted the development of Isuochi and beyond.
The speakers also appreciated Governor Alex Otti for identifying with the people of Isuochi and Umunneochi and prayed for continued wisdom and strength for him to lead Abia State to greater heights.
In his vote of thanks, Prof. Ihechukwu Madubuike expressed gratitude to Governor Otti and the people of Abia State for the honour accorded him.
He also appreciated Mayor Sunny Afurobi, elected and appointed government officials from Umunneochi, the leadership of the Isuochi Community Development Association, and the entire people of Umunneochi for celebrating with him and prayed for God’s blessings upon them.
Highlights of the event included a welcome song by the Women’s Wing of the Amuda Town Development Union, an acrobatic performance known as Ida Iya organised by the Isuochi Community Development Association, and the serving of the famous Isuochi traditional delicacy, Iwu Ncha.
Among those who attended the event were the Member representing Umunneochi State Constituency in the Abia State House of Assembly, Hon. Mathias Ume Nwachi; the Commissioner for Lands, Hon. Chaka Chukwumerije; the Senior Adviser to the Governor on Due Process, Dr. Oluebube Chukwu; and many other distinguished sons and daughters of Umunneochi.
