The Mayor of Umunneochi and Council Chairman, Chief Sunny Afurobi, has praised Team Umunneochi for their determination and resilience following their hard-fought 1–0 victory over Team Arochukwu in the ongoing Governor’s Cup, Abia Soccer Fiesta 2026.
Speaking at Ubakala Stadium, Umuahia, after the decisive encounter, Chief Afurobi lauded the team’s outstanding fighting spirit and disciplined performance, describing their display as a reflection of true sportsmanship and collective resolve.
He commended both the players and management team for securing the crucial win, noting that their “can do” attitude and unity were instrumental in earning the much-needed three points.
The Mayor urged the team to sustain their momentum and strong team spirit as the competition progresses, assuring them of his unwavering moral, physical, and financial support throughout the tournament.
Expressing optimism about Team Umunneochi’s prospects, Afurobi said he is confident the squad has the capacity to go all the way and emerge champions if they remain focused and consistent.
He further applauded the players for bouncing back from their opening setback, having lost their first match to Team Osisioma through a walkover caused by unforeseen circumstances leading to late arrival.
Chief Afurobi also commended Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, for conceptualizing and sponsoring the Abia Soccer Fiesta, describing the tournament as a laudable initiative that is productively engaging youths across the state while creating a platform for discovering football talents capable of excelling nationally and internationally.
In separate remarks, Team Manager, Hon. David Mba, and the LGA Coordinator of Team Umunneochi, Architect Chief Obinna Frank Obi, expressed profound appreciation to the Mayor for his personal presence and steadfast support during the match.
They noted that his encouragement and commitment significantly boosted the morale of the players and coaching staff, contributing immensely to the team’s first victory in the competition.
Both officials reaffirmed the team’s determination to remain committed and give their all in pursuit of the Governor’s Cup title.
Team Umunneochi will now shift attention to their next fixture against Team Isuikwuato later this week as they continue their quest for glory in the statewide football fiesta.
