The Rivers State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Prof. Zacheaus Adangor, has resigned.
Prof. Adangor’s resignation was communicated in a letter dated November 14, 2023, and addressed to Governor Sim Fubara.
He noted that his exit from office was based on personal principles and not connected to the political crisis currently rocking the state.
“I hereby give Your Excellency Notice of my resignation as the Honourable Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Rivers State with effect from the date of this letter.
“For the avoidance of doubt, my resignation from the said office is based on personal principles.
“I wish to thank Your Excellency for the opportunity and privilege granted me to serve in your administration as a member of the cabinet.
“My Family and I are indebted to Your Excellency in gratitude,” the letter read in part.
Adangor was one of the cabinet members of former Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, re-appointed by Fubara.
There were rumours in some quarters in Rivers State on Wednesday that the Attorney General, a perceived ally of former Governor Nyesom Wike had been sacked by Governor Fubara.
On Wednesday, the state government demolished the state legislative chamber, citing compromised building foundation as the reason.
Rivers State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Joseph Johnson, in a statement on Wednesday, said the place was unsafe for human habitation because of the recent explosion and fire incident there.
The demolition came as the four lawmakers loyal to the state Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, led by factional Speaker, Edison Ehie, held a plenary at the Government House, Port Harcourt, while the demolition was ongoing.
On Monday, 27 members of the House elected on the Peoples Democratic Party platform defected to the All Progressives Congress and threatened to reject any request by the governor for approval.
