On Saturday, December 27, 2025, the ancient kingdom of Isuochi will stand still. Sons and daughters from far and near will converge on Isuochi Unity Square, Nkwoagu, to pay their last respects to His Royal Majesty, Eze Sir Dr. Godson Irononso Ezekwesiri, the Ochi 1 of Isuochi.

The air will be heavy with grief, yet filled with reverence for a monarch whose reign embodied peace, progress, and cultural pride. The passing of Ochi 1 marks the end of a remarkable era in the history of Isuochi. He was a first-class traditional ruler whose reign stood firmly on peace, unity, dignity, and deep respect for culture.

A Farewell Befitting a King

The Burial Planning Committee has outlined a programme that reflects the stature of the departed ruler. On December 26, the body of Ochi 1 will begin its solemn tour across the nine towns of Isuochi, namely, Achara, Lomara, Ngodo, Mbala, Umuaku, Amuda, Ndiawa, Ihie, and Umuelem.

At each market square, nine cannon shots will echo into the skies, a thunderous salute to a king who united his people. The President General of each town will deliver farewell speeches, ensuring that every community bids him goodbye in its own voice.

From there, the body will be received at the Umunneochi Local Government headquarters by the Executive Mayor, Chief Sunny Afurobi, alongside the Umunneochi Traditional Rulers Advisory Council. The journey will culminate at Isuochi Unity Square, Nkwoagu, where an all-night wake keep of songs and tributes will hold.

Finally, on December 27, the remains of Ochi 1 will be interred in his hometown of Umuelem after a funeral service at the Unity Square. The following day, December 28, a Thanksgiving Service at Methodist Church Nigeria, Umuelem, will close the chapter of an era.

In a mark of ultimate respect, the Burial Planning Committee has decreed that no activities will take place in any town of Isuochi during these three sacred days. Truly, as the Igbo proverb says, “When the great tree falls, the forest stands still.”

A Reign of Peace and Progress

Born 88 years ago, Eze Ezekwesiri ascended the throne in May 1974 and was formally recognized in 1976 as the pioneer paramount ruler of Isuochi Ancient Kingdom. For 51 years, he sat gracefully on the throne of his forefathers, guiding his people with wisdom, humility, and foresight. His reign brought unity and harmony, which in turn attracted development that transformed the fortunes of Isuochi.

Marcus Aurelius once said, “Waste no more time arguing about what a good man should be. Be one.” Ochi 1 was indeed that good man, an embodiment of virtue, justice, and service.

Service Beyond Borders

His Majesty’s influence extended far beyond Isuochi. He served as Chairman of the Traditional Rulers Advisory Councils of both Isuikwuato and Umunneochi Local Government Areas, and was a prominent member of several state and national councils. In the old Imo State, he was a member of the Council of Ndi Eze (1979–1991), the Council on the Prerogative of Mercy, the Airport Appeal Fund Committee, and the Imo State University Relocation Committee.

When Isuochi became part of Abia State, his wisdom continued to shine. Between 2006 and 2008, he served as Deputy Chairman of the Abia State Council of Ndi Eze, an Executive Member of the Southeast Traditional Rulers Council, and a Member of the National Council of Traditional Rulers.

As the African proverb reminds us, “When a great man dies, for years the light he leaves behind shines for the paths of men.” Ochi’s light will indeed guide generations.

A Throne Above Politics

What distinguished His Majesty was his discipline and devotion to the sanctity of the throne. He never entangled himself in partisan politics, preserving the dignity of his office by keeping tradition far removed from political interests. He understood that “politics is temporary, but tradition is eternal.” In doing so, he safeguarded the throne as a neutral institution, a moral compass, and a rallying point for all his subjects.

Faith and Integrity

Beyond tradition, Ochi 1 was deeply rooted in faith. The Methodist Church Nigeria honoured him with the distinguished title of Knight of John Wesley (KJW), recognizing his integrity and devotion. This dual authority—spiritual and traditional—made him a rare bridge between culture and religion, a mediator of disputes, and a beacon of peace.

Albert Einstein once said, “A truly rich man is one whose wealth is measured not in gold, but in the lives he has touched.” By this measure, Ochi 1 was immeasurably wealthy.

A Legacy Etched in Memory

His leadership fostered unity among the nine villages of Isuochi, strengthened thrones across communities, and built bridges among monarchs. His influence touched lives far and wide. As an Irish headstone poignantly reads, “Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, but love leaves a memory no one can steal.” The love and respect of his people will forever immortalize his name.

Though he has joined his ancestors, His Majesty’s legacy endures. He blended tradition with modern diplomacy, faith with culture, and authority with humility. He lived a life of fulfillment, service, and honour, leaving behind legacies that will inspire leaders yet unborn.

On December 27, as Isuochi stands still, the land will mourn not just a king, but a father, a custodian of heritage, and a symbol of unity. And in the silence of that day, the voice of tradition will whisper: “The king is gone, but the kingdom lives on.”
